Intelligence agencies have disclosed that numerous underworld figures residing in the Middle East and Europe have issued threats against Sri Lankan law enforcement officers who fled to Europe due to local underworld threats.

Among those implicated are notorious figures such as ‘Keselbaddara Padme,’ the mastermind behind the shooting of ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa,’ ‘STF Nadun,’ and ‘Kosgoda Rana,’ who are reportedly living in Italy. These individuals are said to be involved in drug trafficking, murders, and extortion activities in Sri Lanka, working in collaboration with Italian mafia gangs.

Meanwhile, the Tangalle Police have received complaints about death threats against two youths who reportedly assisted former Mulliyawali Police OIC IP Kelum Sangeeth, who fled the country after receiving life threats due to his efforts to combat local underworld activities.

IP Sangeeth left the country after intelligence agencies intercepted an audio recording detailing a plot to assassinate him and his wife while he was en route to the Ratnapura High Court to attend a case involving the arrest of prominent underworld figure ‘Pethiyagoda Sankha.’ While in the Police Department as well as in the Special Task Force, IP Sangeeth conducted several operations to control underworld activities, which led to him receiving death threats.

Due to the constant threats, for two years he had submitted multiple written requests to the Police Department and the Crime Victims Protection Authority, seeking permission to carry his service pistol when attending court hearings and travelling home, but these requests were not granted. As a result, the officer was forced to flee abroad with his family for their safety.
