Sri Lanka, Italy to establish political consultations mechanism

Sri Lanka and Italy are set to formalize a structured framework for bilateral dialogue with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of a Political Consultations Mechanism during the official visit of Italy’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi from September 3 - 5, 2025.   

According to the Foreign Ministry, the MoU will be signed at the inaugural session of the Sri Lanka–Italy Political Consultations, co-chaired by Deputy Minister Tripodi and Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra. This marks the highest-level visit from Italy to Sri Lanka in nearly a decade, underscoring the growing importance of bilateral ties since diplomatic relations were first established in 1952.   

During her visit, Deputy Minister Tripodi will also call on Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and hold discussions with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath.
