The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has requested the National Police Commission (NPC) to take disciplinary action against those police officers who have not informed its Kalutara District Member of Parliament Jagath Withana about the death threats he has been facing, despite police having received information on such threats.
Referring to his party’s move, Kalutara District SJB Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera stated that it has been revealed now that the police have been aware of these threats against MP Jagath Withana for the past one month, although they have not taken any action to prevent any untoward incident.
He stated that a situation has arisen where the government is turning a blind eye to such threats, allowing the Opposition politicians to get killed and therefore the Police Commission must take stern action against the responsible officers.
Amid heated arguments in Parliament over the killing of Weligama Pradesheeya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara on Wednesday, MP Withana told Parliament on Friday that a plot to kill him has come to light.
He stated that the IGP has already informed the Kalutara DIG to conduct a probe into the matter. The suspect’s name has also been mentioned in the letter sent by the IGP to the DIG. It says I will be shot dead,” he said.
