Roads around Badulla impassable due to erosion

Vehicular traffic on the Passara – Madugasthalawa road has been restricted from yesterday due to the impending danger of a possible earth slip. A senior official of Badulla Provincial Road Development Authority said the road has caved in at the 6th km post signalling the possible danger.   
He said steps had been taken to erect a side wall to prevent erosion at this location. He also said the road has developed further cracks.   
The official said the transport of heavy vehicles including buses will not be allowed until the construction of the side wall is complete to prevent any accidents in the future.   
Meanwhile, the Haliela- Kurukeddagama road has been been undergoing erosion and that mounds of earth are sliding down. A senior official of the Badulla District Disaster Management Centre said the Wethlewa school buildings is in danger due to the ongoing erosion of the hill and that he informed the National Building Research Organisation to inspect the endangered location and report.
