Disabled university students to receive Rs. 5,000 allowance

Colombo, June 13 (Daily Mirror) - University students with disabilities have started receiving a monthly allowance of Rs. 5,000, with payments and outstanding arrears being disbursed from this month, according to the University Grants Commission (UGC).

UGC Vice Chairman Professor Wasantha Liyanage said the decision to provide the allowance was implemented with effect from January this year to support students with disabilities pursuing higher education.

He said that the payment process has now commenced, and eligible students will receive both the monthly allowance and arrears due from the beginning of the scheme. The initiative is expected to ease financial challenges faced by students with disabilities and support their continued participation in university education.
