Protective embankment built at Ella–Wellawaya accident site

A protective embankment has been constructed at the 15th milepost on the Ella–Wellawaya main road, where a tragic bus accident earlier this month claimed 15 lives and left 18 others injured, Uva Province Governor Kapila Jayasekara said.  

The accident occurred on September 4, when a bus carrying Tangalle Municipal Council employees and their families returning from a trip plunged nearly 1,000 feet into a ravine.  

Governor Jayasekara said the location had been the site of several fatal accidents in the past. In an effort to prevent further tragedies, the provincial administration, in collaboration with the Road Development Authority, built the protective embankment using reinforced soil.
