Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman has obtained injunction orders against several YouTube channels under the provisions of the Online Safety Act, following the circulation of phone recordings allegedly involving SJB discussions with newly elected municipal council members in an effort to win their support.
“I obtained injunction orders against these individuals who are spreading false and defamatory content about us under the Online Safety Act. We cannot allow this kind of mudslinging to continue,” Rahman told the Daily Mirror.
This marks the first known instance of an injunction being granted under the Online Safety Bill since its enactment in 2024.
Meanwhile, another audio clip surfaced over the weekend, purportedly featuring a conversation between an SJB member and a representative from the National People’s Power (NPP). The clip was played at a media briefing by Niroshan Padukka, SJB’s Colombo District Organizer, who claimed it featured the voice of a JVP member attempting to persuade SJB members to switch allegiance.
Amid these developments, the election of the Mayor of Colombo is scheduled to take place today under local government regulations.
