Man dies in his effort to save a group from drowning in Kalaoya

A man who attempted to save a group of people from drowning in the Murundanveli waterway in Kalaoya drowned while area residents managed to save the group.
When 16 individuals bathing in Kalaoya got into difficulty, a fishermen saved one of them who happened to be his 15-year old daughter but drowned in his attempt to save the others.
 The fisherman’s body was recovered soon after the incident.
The diseased Mohmed Foureen (40) was among a group of 16 individuals from Wellamundalama area.
Residents of the area pointed out that Kalaoya had swelled due to the heavy rain experienced at present, but many individuals took a risk to bathe regardless of its danger.
Puttalam City Coroner Badurdeen Hisam who visited the scene and held the preliminary inquiry ordered police to refer the body of the diseased to JMO Puttalam Base Hospital for a postmortem.
