The Justice Ministry is to seek Cabinet approval soon for the appointment of a committee to decide how to proceed with the establishment of an independent prosecution unit as promised in the election manifesto, Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said.

Minister Nanayakkara, in a video footage released to the media recently, said he held the initial round of discussion with the relevant stakeholders including the Police Department and the Attorney General’s Department.

He said such a prosecution unit would be set to expedite litigation.

“We are yet to get Cabinet approval for the appointment of a committee to study this matter further. I instructed my officials to prepare the Cabinet paper,” he said.

He said the independent prosecution unit would be a reality very soon.

However, the government’s move has drawn a flak from the Opposition which described it as a move undermining the Attorney General’s Department.
