How to vote at the LG election tomorrow

  • It is simple, just mark the cross sign in the blank box in front of the symbol of your party or the independent group in the ballot paper and put it in the ballot box, after folding it

Although we are accustomed to vote for a political party and three particular preferable candidates at the Parliamentary, Provincial Councils and Local Government elections, tomorrow’s election is different, as local Government Elections are now held under the mixed electoral system introduced in 2017.
Remember, tomorrow we have to vote for a candidate from our area (ward) only.
At the Presidential election, we voted only for a candidate of a particular political party. Some people had given their second and third preference to candidates of other parties.
At the Parliamentary election, we voted for a political party while marking our preferential vote for three candidates of that party, putting a cross on the preference numbers of each of our preferred candidates, in the ballot paper.
At the Provincial Council election also, so far, we followed the same procedure as we did at the Parliamentary election.
At the Local Government elections (elections for municipal councils, urban councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas) we also did the same until 2017.
However, at the tomorrow’s Local Government elections we must vote only for the candidate of our preferred party contesting in our area (ward).
It is simple, just mark the cross sign in the blank box in front of the symbol of your party or the independent group in the ballot paper and put it in the ballot box, after folding it.
