In the midst of economic hardships , the government has turned towards refurbishing residences of MPs at Madiwela, Parliament said yesterday.
A dicusstion Renovation of MPs quarters at Madiwala was made during a meeting which Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne had with the Housekeeping Commitee.
It has also been decided to construct a rest room in Madiwela for the drivers of MPs. Accordingly, drivers of MPs who come from outside Colombo will have the opportunity of using the new rest room till sessions come to an end.
Meanwhile monthly meal charges for executive staff will be reduced to Rs 3000 from Rs 4000 while the charges for non-executive staff has been reduced to Rs 2000 from Rs 2500. This decision has been made following the request made by the staff. New fees will come to effect from July 1 this year.
It has been decided not to increase the meals charged from drivers of MPs, police and security personnel who provide security to MPs and journalists.
It was also reported that some parts of the Parliament Holiday Bungalow will be given out to Parliament staff. Only MPs were able to rent it out for holidays earlier.
