Former Minister Gammanpila under CID probe

• The complaint alleged the former Minister had made remarks at the said press conference which could incite disharmony among different communities

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday informed Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura that an investigation has been started against former Minister Udaya Gammanpila.  

CID officers told court that the inquiry was launched following a complaint received on August 12, 2025, regarding a statement made by the former Minister during a press conference.  

The officers further submitted that the complaint alleged the former Minister had made remarks at the said press conference which could incite disharmony among different communities.  

The CID informed court that the probe is being carried out to determine whether the remarks amount to an offence under Section 3(1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act or under Section 120 of the Penal Code.
