Flood threat not an obstacle to election

District Secretary K.M.G. Nishantha told the media yesterday that the prevailing inclement weather experienced in the Ratnapura District would not cause any obstructions to the poll.

He said a minor flood threat has emerged in the upper region of the Kaluganga basin in the aftermath of heavy rain experienced for about two hours.

The District Secretary said steps have been taken to conduct the poll and the counting unobstructed in case of any emergency due to inclement weather.

He said the election of members to Ratnapura Municipal Council, Balangoda and Embilipitiya Urban Councils and Eheliyagoda, Ratnapura, Kuruvita, Pelmadulla, Balangoda, Imbulpe, Godakawela, Kahawatta, Weligepola, Nivithigala, Ayagama, Kalawana, Embilipitiya, and Kolonne Pradeshiya Sabhas will be held today.

In case of a flood threat, the worst-affected would be the Ratnapura Municipal Council area.

The District Secretary said the water level in Kalugana, Kuruganga, Wayganga, Denawakganga, Niriellaganga, Galaturaganga and Kukuleganga rivers had not swelled despite heavy rain experienced in the district for several days and that he is hopeful that any flood threat obstructing the poll would not occur.
