Cabinet paper to be presented soon for scrapping MPs’ privileges

  • The committee was appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to look into the possibilities of pruning privileges enjoyed by Parliament members and the report of the committee was handed over to the President in  December. 

 While New Democratic Front (NDF) MP Ravi Karunanayake has tabled a Private Members’ Motion in Parliament on Friday seeking the abolition of the pension scheme for Members of Parliament, the government is also preparing to present a Cabinet paper on the same matter, in par with the K.T.Chitrasiri Committee   
The committee was appointed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to look into the possibilities of pruning privileges enjoyed by Parliament members and the report of the committee was handed over to the President in December.   
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala had stated that the Cabinet paper is to be presented in accordance with the election pledge given by the National People’s Power (NPP) to prune privileges enjoyed by politicians, before the recent Presidential and Parliamentary elections.   He expressed hope that MP Ravi Karunanayake would support the government’s Bill to abolish privileges for the politicians when it is presented in Parliament.
