The winning essays will be announced at a formal prize-giving ceremony on 13 September, to be held at the College Hall, in conjunction with the finals of the STC All-Island English Oratory Competition.

As part of its 175th Anniversary commemorations, S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, hosted the final round of its nationwide English essay competition, welcoming 175 finalists from schools across Sri Lanka.
The event sought to uphold one of the College’s longstanding ideals: clarity of thought and excellence in English expression. It provided students with a forum to articulate their ideas with precision, insight, and confidence.
Finalists, who were selected from a large number of submissions, were invited to the College for a full-day programme. Proceedings commenced with a writing workshop conducted by Michelle Herft, a distinguished educator with longstanding ties to the College. Participants then proceeded to compose original essays on topics aligned with their respective age categories, within a supervised two-hour session.

The essay competition is one of several national events being held as part of the College’s 175th Anniversary commemorations—a celebration that not only honours a distinguished legacy, but also invests in the development of articulate, thoughtful Sri Lankans for generations to come.
