‘Will They Burn Our House Down’: New Rajitha play to premiere at the Wendt

‘Ape Gedara Gini Thiyaida’ (Will They Burn Our House Down), a contemporary tale of life and society by Rajitha Dissanayake, will premier on 17th and 18th October at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7 pm.

Rajitha Dissanayake ranks among 
Sri Lanka’s top original playwrights over the past 3 decades. He has produced popular and award-winning plays like ‘Weeraya Merila’, ‘Sihina Horu Aran’, ‘Apahu Herenna Be’, ‘Bakamoona Veedi Basi’ and ‘Nethuwa Beri Minihek’ and ‘2019 Jooli Mase Dawasak’. His scripts focus on important socio-political issues and have drawn crowds, sparked debate, won awards, and toured internationally.
In Ape Gedara Gini Thiyaida (Will They Burn Our House Down), a group of female friends are gathering for a long-awaited school reunion at the home of one of them. The occasion is made even more special by the attendance of a friend who now lives abroad.As a surprise for the visiting friend, the others have invited the singer who was her favourite back in her school days. What most do not know, however, is that one of the friends is in an extramarital affair with this singer. 
On the day of the reunion, an unforeseen incident sets off a chain of dramatic events. The tensions that follow are further inflamed by a coordinated social media campaign. The night builds to a fever pitch, and even the house hosting the reunion stands in danger of being burned down.
The cast of ‘Ape Gedara Gini Thiyaida’ includes Jayani Senanayake, Bimsara Premaratne, Ama Wijesekara, Yashodha Rasaduni, Prasad Sooriyaratchi, Pradeep Aragama, and Tharusha Kumarasinghe. Music for the play is composed by Mahira Dissanayake; Stage set design by Anuradha Mallawarachchi; Makeup by Priyantha Dissanayake; Light design by Ranga Samarakoon, Costumes by Ama Wijesekara and Sureni Lenora, and Stage management by Sureni Lenora and team.
