Grandfather arrested over rape

The girl had been first raped by the suspect when she was ten years

A 12-year-old schoolgirl suffering from a urine infection was examined by the doctors, to find that she had been raped at times for two years by her grandfather. 

The 54-year-old suspect is the father of five sons, and the victim is the daughter of one of them, living near the suspect’s house.   
On information from the hospital, Gampola Police that initiated investigations arrested her grandfather and produced him before Gampola Magistrate Sarasi Sri Paranamana, who remanded him till July 24. 

Police told court that the girl’s mother has been employed abroad for about four years and that the girl had been first raped by the suspect when she was ten years old and since then continually raped her.   

However, when she developed a urine infection about two days ago, she was admitted to Gampola Teaching Hospital, and the doctors examined her to find that she had been raped. When further questioned, she revealed that her grandfather raped her over a period of time.   

Gampola Police had initiated investigations on information from the hospital and arrested .the suspect.   

The girl was transferred yesterday for further medical examination to Peradeniya Teaching Hospital.   

OIC Women and Children’s Bureau Ishara Herath, Sergeant 1462 Sandya, 7379 Ilangakoon and 9828 Amarasinghe are conducting further investigations on the instructions of HQI Gampola Police Nissanka Kannangara and SSP Dayal Ilangakoon.
