The Daily Mirror article on drug shortage titled “Bypass patient compelled to bring drugs worth over Rs. 100,000 from outside” was highlighted in Parliament yesterday by SLPP MP D.V. Chanaka.
The MP told Parliament that, as the Daily Mirror article has reported, there is an acute shortage of drugs and pharmaceutical items in many hospitals.
The MP said bypass patients are given a list of drugs and pharmaceutical items, even transparent dressing and suture material to be bought from outside.
According to the article, patients seeking life-saving procedures such as bypass surgeries at the Colombo National Hospital have been compelled to bring surgical and pharmaceutical items from outside, costing over Rs. 100,000 due to a severe shortage of critical drugs and surgical supplies.
