The government yesterday said it will procure power from Adani Green Energy Limited wind power projects as it has decided to accept the last price of US$ 0.0826 per KW.
A Cabinet decision was taken on Monday to award the tender to Adani Green Energy SL Limited for 20 years.

In March 2022, Cabinet nod was given to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Adani Green Energy Limited to develop wind power stations in Mannar and Pooneryn.
Accordingly, a negotiation committee was appointed to evaluate the project proposal furnished by the Indian company.
Based on the recommendations of that committee, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution forwarded by the Minister of Electricity and Power to accept the last price, subject to payment in Sri Lankan Rupees as per the actual foreign exchange rate.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera shared that on the current exchange rate considered (1 US$ = Rs. 300), the cost of energy will be Rs. 24.78 per kWh.
The current average cost of energy in Sri Lanka is Rs. 39.02 per kWh.

The Mannar (250 MW) and Pooneryn (234 MW) wind projects will be implemented with an investment of US$ 740 million.
According to an inside source of Adani Group, the entity has offered the lowest tariff than any existing wind project in the country and will help the island nation save over US$ 270 million annually by displacing higher-cost fuel-based tariffs.

While environmental concerns have been raised by the public, Adani affirmed it will deploy modern technology to not just minimise the project’s potential environmental impact but also deliver it on time and budget.

The project will implement AI-based radar systems to detect incoming flocks and automatically shut down turbines during high-risk periods. The project will also use taller turbines with slower blade rotation speeds, reducing collision risks.
Meanwhile, outside of the project, Adani shared it is committed to investing in habitat restoration projects to mitigate any habitat loss. Plans are afoot to roll out awareness campaigns targeting local communities, stakeholders, and developers to foster an understanding of the importance of bird conservation.
