The 30th National Bartenders Competition, a collaborative effort by International Distillers Limited (IDL) and the Sri Lanka Hospitality Graduates Association (SLHGA), has seen a surge in female contestants, nearly doubling the number from the previous edition.

This development indicates an emerging trend in Sri Lanka’s burgeoning hospitality sector, showcasing its commitment to inclusivity and diversity.

Supported by the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM), this landmark event underscores the nation’s dedication to fostering bartending excellence and solidifying its position as a prominent tourism and hospitality destination.

This year’s competition has shattered previous records, attracting over 350 participants from 150 hotels and 50-60 students. This diverse group of talented individuals is competing to redefine mixology by incorporating local ingredients, showcasing the rich and unique flavours of Sri Lanka.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo, SLHGA President Patrick Pereira emphasised the notable increase in female bartenders as a key highlight of the competition. The percentage of female participants has risen significantly from 14 percent last year to 22 percent this year, with two women reaching the finals in the previous edition.

Pereira stated, “The significant rise in female participants is a fantastic trend for the industry.” He further highlighted the competition’s crucial role in showcasing local talent, raising industry standards, and bolstering Sri Lanka’s reputation as a world-class destination.

The 30th edition of the National Bartenders Competition will kick off this month and continue for a three-month period across the country. The grand finale is scheduled to be held on June 18th at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo.

International Distillers Limited Director/CEO Kemal De Soysa echoed Pereira’s sentiments, emphasising the competition’s significance in demonstrating the global competitiveness of Sri Lankan ingredients and talent. The event also serves as a valuable platform for career advancement and enhancing customer experiences within the hospitality industry.

SLHGA General Secretary Dickson Kumara underscored the competition’s alignment with Sri Lanka’s ongoing tourism revival efforts. He emphasised the critical role of skilled bartenders in delivering exceptional hospitality and meeting international standards, contributing to the overall positive experience of tourists visiting the country.
