Gas, water and electricity tariffs set to rise: Ananda Palitha

Colombo, June 4 (Daily Mirror) - The prices of essential services and commodities, including domestic LP gas, water and electricity, could increase in the coming months, Media Spokesperson and Convener of the Samagi Energy and Joint Trade Unions Force, Ananda Palitha warned.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Palitha claimed that the price of an LP gas cylinder could rise by more than Rs. 300 by the end of this week, while water tariffs may be increased by June 15.

“According to the information available to us, the price of LP gas could be increased by as much as Rs. 500 per cylinder,” he said.

Palitha alleged that the anticipated price hikes were linked to the importation of low-quality coal stocks and what he described as the unnecessary outflow of foreign exchange from the country.

He expressed concern that the increased costs would place an additional burden on consumers already struggling with the rising cost of living.

No official announcement has yet been made by the relevant authorities regarding revisions to LP gas prices, water tariffs or electricity charges.
