Sri Lanka’s tea production could exceed 275 million kilogrammes (MnKgs) in 2025, provided the growing conditions remain stable, according to Asia Siyaka Commodities.

In 2024, tea production in the island nation witnessed an increase, despite the difficult conditions.

Tea production reached a three-year high of 262 MnKgs in 2024, up 2.4 percent on the 2023 quantity of 256 MnKgs. Production gains came primarily from the Mid Grown sector, which rose a sharp 12.5 percent year-on-year to 47.6 MnKgs, recording a healthy 5 MnKg gain.

The Low Growns rose 2.4 percent, from 155.1 to 158.8 MnKgs in 2024.

The High Growns that recorded excessive rain early in 2Q declined 5 percent, from 58.6 to 55.7 MnKgs.

These production gains were achieved despite the irregular climatic conditions and modest fertiliser application by the smallholder sector that accounts for up to 75 percent of national tea production, Asia Siyaka Commodities said.
