WB funded city development to begin soon

The second phase of the World Bank funded Colombo City development project will include the extension of the Marine Drive to Roxy Theatre, to construct two beach parks in Crow Island and Marine Drive while constructing two fly overs for Pedestrians in Kollupitiya.

The Rs.400 million project which is set to begin soon will completely change the face of Colombo with better infrastructure facilities.

Colombo Mayor A. J. M Muzzamil said the two bridges only for pedestrians would be constructed from the Bambalapitiya Railway station to Galle Road and another from the Kollupitiya Railway Station to Dharmapala Mawatha.

“This will easily link commuters travelling from busses and railway stations and vice versa,” the Mayor said. The bridges will have several entry points where the pedestrians will be carried to the upper floors by elevators, special escalators will also be set up for the differently abled to get to the escalators with special entry points for the disabled.

“We are also going to construct two beach parks at Crow Island and along Marine Drive under this project,” he said.

The Mayor said that while an extension of the Marine Drive up to Roxy Theatre was in the pipelines, the City will also be getting new bus stands that will notify the number of the busses that will stop at the stand.

“We are also going to install telephone booths and stalls that will sell newspapers and other things,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
