The Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) recovered a large number of fuel tanks of lorries and other vehicles laden with explosives during a major search operation in Udayanagar, Kilinochchi.

The fuel tanks of two Ashok Leyland lorries, an Isuzu lorry, two Toyota lorries and two trishaws were found buried in the Munigillaru forest area in Udayanagar.

They were found buried within the premises of the former LTTE Neelawan Base which was under the control of an LTTE intelligence leader called ‘Kapil Amman’.

The base had been producing these tanks and then fit them into vehicles with explosives to carry out bombings and suicide missions mainly in Colombo during the war.

The recovery was made by the TID after gathering information from an LTTE suspect in custody. It was revealed that these fuel tanks were buried by the LTTE at that time in order to carry out missions targeting VIP’s and public places.

The TID is conducting further investigations into the incident under the directions of its Director DIG Nimal Vakishta. (Supun Dias)
