Students in NCP at risk of contracting renal disease

Rajarata University Senior Lecturer in Medicine Dr. Channa Jayasumana said tests carried out by the California State University had revealed that higher grade students in the the North Central Province were at risk of contracting renal diseases in their early youth.

“We sent urine samples of students studying in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 to the California State University and those tests have revealed that they are prone to contract kidney diseases at an early age,” he said.

Dr. Jayasumana said it was a serious issue facing the country where even students were at the risk of being exposed to this menace.

“Earlier we heard of people in their 30s and 40s catching this disease,” he said and added that they were having discussions with the health ministry as to what could be done to rectify this crisis situation.

“We are talking to health authorities about this issue. We have recommended that school children should be provided with clean water at schools in the North Central Province. Nearly 50 schools have been provided with water purifiers,” he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)
