SL to develop national highways with concrete surfacing

The Sri Lankan government has allocated Rs.19.5 billion to rehabilitate and upgrade three main highways employing local contractors by concrete surfacing instead of commonly used carpet surfacing.

It will be done on the Anuradhapura–Trincomalee A12 highway and the Ibbagamuwa-Madagalle as well as the Katuwane–Panamure roads.

The decision to use concrete on the main highways with the assistance of local contractors, under the National Highways development Project of the Road Development Authority of Sri Lanka received cabinet approval last week.

The implementation of the project will see the Ibbagamuwa, Kumbukgate, Madagalle (B159) road with a length of 34.19km and a width of 6.2m and the Anuradhapura–Trincomalee (A12) road with a length of 97.1km and a width of 8m and the Katuwane, Alupothdeniya, Panamure road with a length of 23km and a width of 6.2m will be developed with concrete surfacing. The completion of this project will result in the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Anuradhapura-Trincomalee Road (A12), as the major road connecting the North Western, North Central and the Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

The government intends to rehabilitate and upgrade 662.04kms, island wide with the collaboration of local contractors under the scheme of developing National Highways through local contractors by concrete surfacing. (Source: News.lk)
