Video: Contraband worth Rs.10mn seized by Customs

The staff of Customs Revenue Task Force today seized seven wooden boxes with illicit cigarettes, shoes, deodorant bottles and eye liners worth more than Rs.10million, Customs Spokesperson Lesley Gamini said.

He said seven wooden boxes containing 116,000 sticks of Top Mountain brand cigarettes valued at Rs. 6,480,000, 2488 pairs of shoes valued at Rs. 497,600, 5088 bottles of 200ml deodorant bottles valued at Rs. 1,526,400 and eye liners valued at Rs. 60,000.

“Investigations found those illicit cigarettes, which were packed in cardboard boxes of a fan, a television, four-burner gas cookers and a refrigerator. The contraband was imported as unaccompanied personal baggage to evade duty concessions,” Mr. Gamini said.

The consignments are imported from Dubai by three passengers on March 28, June 4, July 2 from the Kandy, Matale and Colombo areas.

Investigations are being carried out under the Direction of Director of Customs K.D. Nicholas, Superintendent Nihal Alahapperuma. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
