“During the final phase of the war, India urged Prabaharan to stop fighting and if he had listened to it, he would still be alive” said Indian Finance Minister P. Chithambaram, when he was interviewed by Puthiya Thalaimurai TV Channel on Saturday, January 04.

During the interview, the Minister was responding to questions on several matters related to Indian political situation, murder case of Rajiv Gandhi, coming general election and was also questioned on the last stages of war between LTTE and Sri Lankan  government.

“It was said that the war was stopped, but it did not happen. President Rajapaksa and LTTE leader Prabaharan were too adamant. India requested both sides to stop the war and also appealed to Prabaharan. He did not listen, if he had done, he would still be alive today”.

“India is ready to discuss and solve the fishermen problem, but Tamil Nadu government is not ready. No date has still been decided on” he said.

When asked about Rajiv Gandhi murder case, whether there were still some people to be questioned, he said “The views that are being expressed now are not statements but have been put out only now. For this, people who initiated the legal proceedings must answer, I cannot say anything. Only Karthikeyan can”.

“If there are doubts about investigations and verdict, those affected must file a motion for re-investigation. If they were found not guilty, Government will accept it, and that is why the death sentence has not been carried out yet” he said. (That’s Tamil)
