The verbal exchange between Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne and Jathika Hela Urumaya Leader the Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera about the heroin detection must come to an end, the Bodu Bala Sena Organisation (BBS) said today.

It said the Prime Minister should tender a public apology to the Sangha for making derogatory remarks about Ven. Omaple Sobhitha Thera.

“The Prime Minister said he regretted making caustic remarks on Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera. But he must publically apologise to the Thera and to the Sangha for making such remarks. As a senior citizen and also as the Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Minister he has no moral right to address a monk in that way,” BBS General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thera said today after meeting the Prime Minister at his official residence.

The BBS said they met the Prime Minister to find the actual events behind the container carrying heroin found at the Orugodawatta container yard and to find out whether he had any connection with the Container.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s office in a statement said the Premier had told the monks during the meeting that he was honest in both personal and political lives and that he never acted in hatred or jealousy.

The Prime Minister had told the BBS that he had not considered party politics even when giving government appointments.   (Lahiru Pothmulla)
