Palmyrah Development Board improve turnover

The Palmyrah Development Board had managed to improve its financial position earning a turnover of Rs.20 million in 2010 compared to their earnings of Rs.12 million the previous year.

Its General Manager, M. B. Loganathan, said that the board had been mainly focusing on the upliftment of the social status of the palmyrah based community and the restoration of palmyrah palms. He said that other activities such as developing awareness on the proper utilisation of palmyrah based products, preventing the exploitation of these products, the formation of several women’s groups to work towards increasing handicrafts had also been carried out by the Board.

He also emphasised that although sales centres belonging to the Board had been running at a loss in 2008 last year they had taken pains to establish and upgrade their production centres and sales outlets, which was why they had been able to increase turnover so drastically.

He said that the board was planning to establish sales outlets in the southern part of the country and look to export some of the products as well. In addition he revealed that the board was also planning to promote mobile sales units as well. “We wish to highlight that as a service oriented entity we are contributing significantly to the gross domestic product of the country while sustaining our resources and its protecting the environment,” Mr. Loganathan added.
