1 dead, 40 injured in accident

One child has been killed and over 40 people hospitalized following an accident on the Kandy-Mahiyangana Road today involving a school bus and another private bus, police said. Out of the injured, 20 are school children who have been rushed to the Kandy General Hospital. 

Police said the accident was a head on collision which took place on the Wegala bend at around 6.30 a.m. today.

The private bus had been carrying passengers who had been traveling for a wedding while the school bus had been taking students from the Teldeniya Maha Vidyalaya. The victim was a seven year old student of the said school.

Residents in the area had rushed the injured to the Teldeniya Hospital out of which most of them were later transferred to the Kandy General Hospital due to their major injuries. 

"The Teldeniya Hospital had to get ambulances from other hospitals to transfer the injured patients to the Kandy General Hospital. Most of those transferred were school children," Kandy District Medical Officer Upali Korasagolla said.

The Teldeniya Police is conducting investigations.
