Number of liquor licenses on the rise

Despite anti-alcohol campaigning by the state, the number of liquor licenses issued by the government has increased. A total of 51 liquor licenses were issued last year as opposed to 36 in 2009, Parliament was informed today.

The government gave these details to the House in response to a question by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake.

All liquor licenses had been issued to hotels approved by Sri Lanka Tourist Board. Six licenses had been issued in Colombo, another six in Gampaha, four in Galle, three in Anuradhapura, five in Kalutara and another three in Puttalam.

Also, six licenses had been issued in Jaffna, one in Kilinochchi and another in Trincomalee. No license had been approved in the Kurunegala and Batticaloa districts.

The government had earned Rs.4.2 million in revenue, an increase against Rs.2.3 million earned the previous year.
