Mulleriyawa shooting, five more arrested

The CID, which is investigating the Mulleriyawa gun battle that killed Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, yesterday arrested five more suspects in this connection.

Police media spokesman Maxi Proctor said they were arrested from the suburbs of Colombo but did not specify the locations.

He said some 50 statements had also been recorded.

Sources said most of the suspects arrested so far are loyalist of parliamentarian Duminda Silva, who was seriously injured in the shootout and is being treated at the Kotte Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital.

On Monday, the CID arrested a suspect and took into custody 16 weapons, which included 12 pistols, two revolvers and two T-56 assault rifles.

Mr. Premachandra’s funeral will be held today at the Umagiliya Grounds in Kolonnawa.
Several teams of detectives under the direction of DIG Jayantha Kulathilaka have been deployed to carry out the investigations. They began investigations immediately after the incident.

Meanwhile tight security will be provided by the Special Task Force (STF) and the Army for the funeral today.

Hundreds of STF and the Army personnel have been deployed in the area to assist the police to maintain law and order. (Supun Dias)
