'Minuwangoda Jeewan' shot dead

Two persons including an underworld criminal known as Minuwangoda Jeewan had been killed following a shootout with Police Special Task Force (STF) personnel in Ratmale, Dickwella last night, the Police said.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said two STF personal were also injured during a shootout.

The SSP said that the STF received information regarding the movement of suspects who had allegedly involved in underworld activities.

“The STF personal carried out an operation to apprehend them who were travelling in a three-wheeler in Ratmale at the time,” Rohana said.

Police said the three-wheeler in which the two men were travelling was ordered to stop at a police checkpoint but did not stop. However the three-wheeler had toppled while fleeing and the suspects had opened fire at the intercepting STF personnel.

The two men were killed during the exchange of fire that ensued, according to Police.

The injured STF personal following the shootout were admitted to the Matara Hospital.

Police recovered a micro pistol and a hand grenade from the suspects.(Darshana Sanjeewa)
