Lankan ISIS militant: Police probe based on NIC

Police are checking the accuracy of social media and foreign news reports about a Sri Lankan ISIS militant reportedly killed in a Syrian airstrike.

Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said today that Police Headquarters had directed the Central Province SP to launch investigations into the incident after the man’s national identity card was recovered in Kandy. Police said he was known to be a karate instructor residing in Kandy.

Several foreign news agencies and social media reported that a 37-year-old Sri Lankan named Abhu Shuraih Sailani (name given after he joined the ISIS) had travelled to Syria, after pursuing Islamic studies and completing his LLB in Shariah Law from the International Islamic University in Pakistan.

However, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mahishini Colonne told Daily Mirror that though there were several reports about a Sri Lankan ISIS militant killed in an airstrike, the ministry had not been informed of such an incident. (Piyumi Fonseka)
