Khuram Sheikh Murder case: Verdict on July 18

The verdict on the Khuram Sheikh murder trial and the raping of his girl friend in a Tangalle resort, was fixed for July 18 by Colombo High Court Judge Rohani Walgama who heard submissions of lawyers for 33 days within a period of three and a half months.

Former Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana and five others have been charged over the killing of the British national and raping of his girlfriend at the Tangalle Resort on December 25 in 2011.

The judge also ordered the prisons superintendent to produce the accused in court on this date.

The former PS chairman who was earlier released on bail was re remanded for breaching bail conditions.

The accused in the case are Obada Arachchige Lahiru Kelum alias Raveendra, Uduwanage Saman Deshapriya, former PS chairman Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana, Weerappulige Praneeth Chathuranga, Mohottige Sarath alias Sahan and Saranaarachchi Patabendige Chanuka Chathuranga.

The other charges against the accused are causing a damage of Rs 160, 250 to the hotel and robbery of bottles of liquor valued at Rs.41,526.

This case was initially filed in the Tangalle High Court on 25 October 2013 and subsequently transferred to the Colombo High Court as requested by the AG considering the nature of the case and possible threats to the witnesses.

The Senior State Counsel Thusith Mudalige who appeared for the prosecution urged the court to impose punishment as charges have been proven beyond reasonable doubt.
