Video: JVP on Thunnana: Police allegations a fabrication

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today the allegation by police spokesman Aith Rohana that a group of people with ulterior motives had incited the Thunnana residents to protest was baseless.

The JVP said it was the police and the factory owner who had provoked the people.

General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a media briefing that SSP Rohana had indirectly alleged that opposition politicians were behind the incident without knowing the facts. He said even ruling UPFA politicians had also supported the protestors.

Mr. Silva said tear gas was fired at women who were observing sill at the Jayasumanarama Temple. “Firing tear gas at a temple on a full Moon Poya day is not justifiable at all,” he said.

Mr. Silva said SSP Rohana had made it his habit to make baseless political statements making one wonder whether he was campaigning for the ruling UPFA.

“Is he the police media spokesman or the official spokesman of the UPFA,” Mr. Silva asked and added that this was another example of the politicisation of the police.

He said the politicization of the police is clearly evident when you see the manner in which they maintain law and order with regard to election laws.

Mr. Silva alleged that some police stations were actively engaged in the UPFA campaign in run up to the provincial council election. (Yohan Perera and Sanath Desmond)
