Sports journalist Shanaka Amarasinghe was reportedly assaulted today at the Navy rugby grounds in Welisara following the Navy- CR rugby match this evening, and a Police complaint is now being lodged.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Amarasinghe who has been a promoter of rugby for over a decade as a player, referee and a sports journalist, said he was assaulted within full view of the military police.

“I was walking towards my car after the game and one person grabbed my hand and said ‘ Poddak wareng’ ( can u come over here). They dragged me into a wide open stage where another four guys started punching me on my face and the side of the head, thereafter they put me down and kicked me” he said.

“This was in full view of the military Police who were stationed around 100 meters from the gate and a bus full of other people. My friend started screaming and the assailants were taken aback and walked calmly back into the camp in full view of everyone” he said.

However, Amarasinghe said he had not sustained any major injuries as a result of the assault.(Hafeel Farisz)
