IGP transfers M'kuliya cops

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda Balasuriya has transferred the OIC of the Mattakuliya police station and his police officers pending an inquiry over the tense situation which arose in Mattakuliya since yesterday.

A statement from the Police Headquarters said that the Colombo North SSP and SP have also been transferred. The IGP says disciplinary action will be taken against the officers if it is proved that they acted against the law.

However speaking on National Television the IGP said it was wrong to blame the police over the incident and added that an attempt by a group to secure the release of the drug dealer resulted in the tense situation.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) are conducting separate inquiries into the incident.

Nearly 200 people have been questioned over the incident while 25 others have been arrested, IGP Balasuriya said. (SD)
