United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said today that he went to the US to learn how to form a UNP Government and develop the country and if he wanted to learn about corruption and terror he would have gone to Medamulana.

“I went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States to teach and I wanted to learn the methods of developing the country. I wanted to learn how to set up a UNP Government and develop the country,” he said.

“I am not concerned about constructing roads and ports. It is up to the Provincial Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas to do so. We do not need new Ports but to make the best use of the existing ones. What we need is to take the country forward,” he said.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said he discussed about the alternatives which could be introduced after scrapping the executive presidency. “We discussed the new system of governance which could be introduced after scrapping the executive presidency. We need proper governance in the country. Otherwise we will have to undergo negative consequences,” he said.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said he got an opportunity to learn how a Government topples due to human right violations and corruption.

He said the future UNP Government would enhance employment opportunities by developing technical knowledge among the youth in the country.

“We can create more than 100,000 job opportunities by giving short term technical knowledge. We do not need an economy where people should migrate to Middle East but an economy where those who are already there to come back. It can only be done under a UNP Government.” (Ajith Siriwardana)
