Kalutara District United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma today denied being served show-cause letter over the last’s week’s alleged incident in the Parliamentary Complex.

He is accused of having attempted to assault UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at the group meeting.

Mr. Thewaraperuma said he had neither received a letter about the suspension of his party membership. He said the MPs who made allegations against him were actually are insulting Parliament.

“Those who say I was under the influence of liquor are insulting Parliament because in that case they are implying that the parliamentary security staff and the police are not doing their job properly and are allowing the drunkards to walk in,” Mr. Thewarapperuma said.

Referring to the allegation that he was armed with a knife on this particular day, Mr. Thewarapperuma said the police would have detected the weapon if he had it with him.

“Even the sniffer dogs may have detected the weapon inside the parliamentary complex,” he said.

Meanwhile some MPs expressing concern about their security after last week’s fracas, called for adequate security for their protection.

A parliamentarian who did not wish to be named said MPs should not be allowed to carry weapons inside the complex using their parliamentary privileges.

He said there was ample proof that on that day, Mr. Thewarapuma was drunk and had threatened Mr. Wickremesinghe and some others with death. Some of the members had recorded last Wednesday’s incident on their mobile phones. (Yohan Perera)
