Foreign teams to study Kurugala prehistoric human remains

Bio-anthologists from the Oxford and Cambridge universities will arrive in Sri Lanka in November to enhance studies on the recently unearthed human skeletal remains from the Kuragala prehistoric site, the Archaeology Department said yesterday.

Deputy Director of the department Dr. Nimal perera said a collaborative investigation would be carried out on the human remains with the support of scientists from the Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Excavations at the Kuragala site began in April this year and many artifacts including stone tools used in prehistoric times were unearthed during the process.

Mr. Perera said the human skeletal remains unearthed last week would be housed in the Archaeology Department laboratory in Colombo.

He expressed confidence that excavations at the site would continue to unearth more pre-historic evidence, which would have significance not only to Sri Lanka but to South Asia as well.(Ajith Siriwardana)
