The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has so far received five complaints of post-election violence of which four were the result of intra party rivalry, officials said today.

PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said the political parties should in the first instance maintain internal discipline if it wished to avoid such incidents.

He said one of the complaints was from Anuradhapura where the candidate who came second in the ruling UPFA’s list of preferential votes had been harassed.

“The three others case are also similar where the winners had harassed or threatened their rivals,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said and mentioned an incident where two brothers belonging to two different parties who had contested the election to the Moratuwa Municipal Council and had clashed with each other.

Saturday's local council election was marred by violence with three killings on polling day. (Kelum Bandara)
