Compensation to motorists

The Petroleum Ministry will decide on how best to compensate motorists whose vehicles were damaged by using substandard petrol after the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) submits its committee report to Minister Susil Premajayantha in the next few days, the CPC said today.

“The report will include comprehensive data on tender procedures and whether they have been followed; deviations if any on standard specification of 90 octane petrol and the complaints received from petroleum consumers,” a senior CPC source said.

The report was compiled by a three-member committee headed by Power and Energy Ministry Secretary H.M.C. Ferdinand and comprising CPC Deputy Refinery Manager Piyasena Ekanayake and Acting Marketing Manager S.C.P. Samarakoon.

The source said on the receipt of the report, the minister would decide on how best to compensate motorists whose vehicles had been damaged as a result of using substandard petrol.

However he said only those who had made written complaints to the CPC giving accurate information would be considered for compensation.

“We expect the complain to us to identify the name and location of the filling station from where they had pumped the fuel; the bill or an affidavit as the case may be; proof of vehicle ownership by way of owners’ registration document and revenue licence,” the CPC source said.
