Chennai protesters demand boycott of SL Defence meet by India

Workers of Chennai's Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) party today staged a protest demanding that India should boycott the Defence meet scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka between August 18 and August 20.

The protest was organized post the recent controversy where the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry website posted a derogatory article against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister (CM) J. Jayalalithaa, resulting in an uproar among the CM's supporters in Chennai.

An article titled: how meaningful are Jayalalithaa's love letters to Narendra Modi had appeared on Sri Lankan Defence Ministry website with pictures of Jayalalithaa dreaming about PM Modi.

Setting aside their differences, political parties in Tamil Nadu had strongly backed Jayalalithaa over the issue.

Amid uproar and protests against the article, the Sri Lankan government was forced to withdraw the controversial pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa from its Defence website.

Jayalalithaa had written to Modi demanding an apology from the Sri Lankan High Commissioner.

The Sri Lankan Defence Ministry had also tendered an unqualified apology to both Modi and Jayalalithaa over the defamatory pictures on its website lampooning the two leaders. (ANI)
