A gang which abducted the 22-year-old son of a millionaire in Vakarai is demanding Rs. 30 million to free him, police said.

The youth identified as Ananda Krisho had been abducted on Thursday in the Vakarai police division in the Batticaloa district.
He is the son of Nallathambi Thanihasalam who owns a fleet of buses and lorries.

According to the police, a gang had come in a van and parked it near the businessman’s house. A gang member had then given a call asked the businessman to come out.  When the millionaire had asked for the name of the caller, he had responded saying he was someone known to everyone.

Police said the caller who demanded the ransom appeared to be a person who unsuccessfully contested the last parliamentary election. He had also contested the last election to the North Central Provincial Council.

However, the businessman had reluctantly sent his son to meet the person but the gang of three had immediately dragged the youth into the vehicle threatening him at gunpoint.
The father had received a call from his son’s mobile phone and a person has threatened the businessman demanding Rs 30 million.

He had received another call from his son yesterday asking demanding for the money. The son had also told him that he was being harassed and already one of his fingers had been broken by the kidnappers. They have threatened to kill the son if the ransom was not paid.

The businessman has not complained to the police about the incident due to fear. However on being informed by some source the police has visited the victim’s house and got a statement from the businessman. Police are now conducting investigations to arrest the extortion gang.
