Colombo, August 6 (Daily Mirror) - The Women and Child Affairs Ministry has decided to fast-track ongoing judicial proceedings related to crimes committed against children, Ministry Secretary K.D.R. Olga said.
She made these remarks while addressing the Multi-sectoral Standing National Committee established to reduce incidents of child abuse.
During the meeting, the committee also reviewed the shortcomings of the national data system maintained by the National Child Protection Authority and proposed improvements to ensure more accurate and effective monitoring of child-related crimes.
The committee’s recommendations and decisions are submitted to the Cabinet quarterly through the Minister.
A proposal is also being prepared to find sustainable solutions to the challenges and gaps identified in the current system.
Cabinet had earlier approved, on May 26, 2025, the establishment of a multi-sectoral mechanism to reduce child abuse under the theme 'Work Together to Safeguard Children.'
This initiative is a key element of the government’s National Policy Framework, 'A Safer World for Children, a Creative Future Generation,' aimed at protecting children from abuse and all forms of violence.
