WhatsApp hotline to report abuse of elders

Colombo, June 16 (Daily Mirror) - The Social Security and Community Empowerment Ministry has introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number to report cases of abuse against adults, particularly elderly individuals neglected by their children.

The public can now provide information regarding such incidents to the National Elders’ Secretariat at any time via 0707 89 88 89.

This initiative coincides with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed annually on June 15, as declared by the United Nations General Assembly. 

Marking the occasion, the National Elders' Secretariat, under the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Protection and Community Empowerment, launched a support service titled “Sarana” aimed at safeguarding the elderly community.

The official unveiling of the WhatsApp service took place today (16) at the Ministry premises, with Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannilage and Deputy Minister Wasantha Piyatissa officiating the event.
