Vesak is today as per UN charter: Ranil

Colombo, May 1 (Daily Mirror) - Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a letter addressed to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara, said that his party cannot participate in the SJB May Day rally today as Vesak is celebrated today as per the UN charter. 

"Many countries in our region began celebrating Vesak from April 30. The United National Party (UNP) also began poya day observances because of this reason," Wickremesinghe said in his letter. 

He expressed his best wishes on the SJB rally which is to be held in Colombo this afternoon.
