Colombo, June 23 (Daily Mirror) - Nearly two tonnes of heroin and ICE (Crystal methamphetamine) drugs have been taken into custody by the law enforcement authorities during the last five months, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said today.

He told a news conference at the Government Information Department that the drugs seized during recent months is a 100 percent progress when compared to previous years.

The Minister said police have launched special operations to raid drug rackets in line with the International Day Against Illicit Drug Trafficking and Abuse where more than 1,000 suspects have been arrested so far.

He said it is essential to reduce the demand for drugs while controlling the supply chain.

The Minister said that some 400,000 drug addicts have been identified in Sri Lanka.
